What is SLO-CAP?

VISION STATEMENT

The vision of SLO CAP is a community where all children are valued, nurtured and safe.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to build effective community partnerships dedicated to the support of strong families and the prevention of child abuse and neglect through education, advocacy and coordination of services.

SLO-CAP

The San Luis Obispo County Child Abuse Prevention Council (SLO-CAP) is a private, non-profit, locally- based organization whose primary purpose is to prevent child abuse and neglect through education, training, and public awareness.

SLO-CAP as a coordinating body is committed to preventing child abuse and neglect by promoting a nurturing, caring and safe community for children and families.

In the late 1970’s, SLO-CAP grew from a grass roots effort of local doctors, social workers, law enforcement personnel and community representatives. This group of volunteers worked together to develop an organized strategy to prevent, intervene on, or treat child abuse in San Luis Obispo county.

The State of California recognized the need to address this issue and in 1987 mandated that Child Abuse Prevention Councils would operate in all counties and SLO-CAP became the designated county-wide advisory group in matters pertaining to child abuse prevention. In order to sustain SLO-CAP efforts, there is a provision in the mandate that the Children’s Trust Fund (based on a fee collected for birth certificates issued in this county) shall be used to support the council in its efforts.

In 2004, 65 individuals and groups have joined SLO-CAP. The membership includes health professionals, educators, child policy advocates, law enforcement, social service professionals, business owners, and concerned citizens.

SLO-CAP Objectives

SLO-CAP is organized for the following purposes:

To coordinate, encourage and develop community efforts in the identification, treatment and prevention of child abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect.

To actively promote communications and cooperation among all public and private agencies and community members involved in child abuse prevention.

To provide a vehicle that will enhance the resources available to law enforcement, protective services, the medical professions, and other agencies involved in the identification, intervention, investigation and treatment of child abuse or neglect.

To increase community awareness through educational programs and public information.

What we’re about: nine months, zero alcohol during pregnancy

Why?: because drinking alcohol during pregnancy (even in the first month) can cause serious problems for the child later in life.
